NAGA/DVC Project PDF Print E-mail

The Department Of Victorian Communities (DVC)has thrown its support behind a three year Sustainability Street project which Vox will undertake with Northern Alliance For Greenhouse Action and local government thoughout the north of Melbourne. Sustainability Street ... at the "coalface" in the campiagn to reverse climate change. Local people leading the Nation!

The Northern Alliance for Greenhouse Action (NAGA) comprises nine Councils and MEFL - the Moreland Eneregy Foundation. Four of the member Council's have signed up to be part of this exciting, regional Sustainability Street project which has been supported by the Department of Victorian Communities.

The aim is to establish a total of 18 new "villages" over the three years. Excitingly, the plan is to then work with 12 new communities over the first 12 to 18 months, with a specific view of recruiting from those groups, a team of Mentors who will support and train, during the second 18 months, six new "villages" in each Council area. This is the holy grail of the Sustainability Street Approach, training and developing individuals and groups who are motivated to use their experience and motivation to "spread the word" and influence others to pursue sustainable living values.

The Hon John Thwaites MLA Minister for both Communities and Environment & Mr. Charles Lane - Director of the Department of Victorian Communities - launch the NAGA project, with highly pertinent and inspiring comments.

Sustainability Street Party -Walton Avenue
26/07/08

Walton street party
Sustainability Street has always been about reaching out into the community and celebrating our achievements. What better way to do this than a street party where everyone is invited.
Walton Street Parties

While Sammy Star kept the kids happy, the adults swapped over their old showerheads for new efficient ones, made soap, had their homes audited, free cycled, met the neighbours and talked about the things they have done and the things they can do.

A great time was had by all.

Thanks to the folks of Walton Ave for organising the party and Darebin Council for supplying the marquees and Stuart Nesbitt for the auditing.

A greener cleaner Merlynston
1/7/08

image When it comes to Green Cleaning, less is more.

The good folk of Merlynston gathered on a cold, windy, wintry night to learn about cleaning using less toxins, less resources, less waste and less energy.Bridget Gardner from Fresh Green Clean was the Guru for the night providing simple methods of assessing cleaning products, techniques to use, and ways to save money and the environment.

Green cleaning is all about the Sustainability Street 3 areas of daily focus, waste, water and energy and how to use less of them. As one member said, “ a lot of it is doing things the way my mother did them” .
