Sustainability Street Approach-Program Histroy

Since 2000, the Sustainability Street Approach (SSA) has proven to be the right response at the right time in history. It is enabling local people to care for nature and community ... By inviting nature and community to care for them!

It would not have been possible without ...

The people of the Cities of Moreland and Wollongong, who took the gamble back in 2002, who, in partnership with Environs Australia, gave the SSA its essential early oxygen!

City West Water: who, in 2004 supported the first regional Sustainability Street Project across the the 6 municipalities (Maribyrnong, Moonee Valley, Brimbank, Melton, Hobson's Bay, Melbourne) which comprise the entire West of Melbourne, where many of those early Villages continue to be connected and active for the ecological sustainability of the Earth. City West Water is highly regarded as the Midwife of the SSA.

Beanies are doffed!

The Cities of Whitehorse and Manningham then established some of the uniquely successful local Sustainability Street Villages.

In NSW, the City of Penrith also became a critical early friend and the work of Amanda and Louise has created wonderfully vibrant local sustainability communities. From this beginning, Blacktown, Holroyd and Willoughby prepared the way for the creation of LOGOSS the local government councils in support of Sustainabiity Street. These Councils won Environmental Trust funding to establish a whole new program inviting three new municipalities - Wyong, Ashfield and Blue Mountains into the fold.

On a parallell path, in 2006, the Moreland Energy Foundation Ltd (MEFL) won the support of the Department of Victorian Communities (DVC) for a three year program which has seen 16 new villages emerge, who themselves, will then mentor yheat another six further new Sustainability Street Villages in the Northern Suburbs of Melbourne.
