Our Food footprint!
And the choices we make, every day – about three times!

marionnov.jpg

Food represents an amazing 36% of the footprint of the average person in Adelaide.  Apparently, a vegetarian driving a Hummer, would have a lower carbon footprint than a meat eater who rides a bicycle.  The Communiversity presentation by Harry and Kate gave great insight into the just how much food can have an impact.  David Suzuki reckons that the average plate of food has travelled about 3,500 kilometre before it hits the table.  As Kate pointed this impact on footprint is something we can make a decision about every three or four hours.

Not only energy, but waste and water too.  It would seem that home grown vegetables use less than 20% of the water that goes into shop vegies and of course, 50% of the average domestic waste to landfill is organic, including significant kitchen scraps – which as compost – would mean that the water used by backyard vegies become even more.

Huge thanks to Lynn, who did the most wonderful Southern Cross of Optimism Presentation.  Inspirational and positive!

Next Gathering – Chrissy Break Up.

Monday 1st December: 6pm – 8pm @Glandore Community Garden, Malwa Street, Glandore.

2009 ... Wednesday 4th of February

Garden, Bathroom, Toilet, Laundry, Kitchen.  If we know, conceptually, that over 50% of water consumption derives from outdoor use and the bathroom, if provides behaviour-power which exceeds having to remember a thousand and one tips.  Conserving smarter rather than harder!

Session One of Eight @ Marion & Nth  Adelaide.
The Social Road to  Sustainability

Considering  the accelerating urgency of ecological sustainability, recently  described by Victorian State Governor Prof David De Kretser as “an  emergency”, and considering that all of the answers are out there and considering also that there is still so much low hanging fruit ...  unpicked  ... there was agreement that doing what we can at the  local, social level to organise for and inspire our friends and neighbours is a rich and satisfying row to  hoe.

The NRM Sustainability Street Villages of South Australia are:  Marion City Council @ Edwardstown, Adelaide City Council @ Garden East  Apartments and in North Adelaide, as well as Sustainable Communities –  Norwood, Payneham and St Peters

Participants at the first City of Marion SSA invite and Info Sessions and Council briefings

The City of Marion, along with Adelaide City Council, is pioneering the Sustainability Street Approach (SSA) in South Australia, thanks to the sponsorship of the Adelaide and Mount Lofty Ranges Natural Resources Management Board.

The City of Marion SSA is off to a flying start with two well attended and highly energised ‘Invite and Information Sessions’ held at the Edwardstown Bowling Club, on Tuesday 22nd and Wednesday 23rd July. Briefing sessions were also held for City of Marion Council Staff.

Judging from the enthusiasm, and lively discussion amongst participants at the information session, it is very likely that at least one Sustainability Street village will emerge in the near future. Kate from City of Marion will email all those who registered at the Information Session, to let them know about details of the next meeting. In the meantime if you have any friends or neighbours who might like to join in, please let them know.

If you would like more information or would like to discuss how you might become involved in an SSA Village in the City of Marion, contact Kate Hubmayer on (08) 8375-6767 or This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it
